Time to reflect on new season for Cowie Ladies

The two week October break has provided the opportunity for all three of Cowie Ladies Netball Teams to reflect after mixed fortunes in their opening matches of the Aberdeen and District Netball Association (ADNA) leagues.

Cowie Blacks, currently in Division Two of the ADNA leagues went into the break with a 30-33 defeat to the Dundee based TNT on Thursday 8th October.  The match at Sheddocksley Sports Centre was a clean hard fought game in which the Blacks seemed to have the upper hand in the first half.  However, TNT changed to a slower pace in the second half and although the lead sea-sawed between both teams TNT finally pulled away in the last five minutes to secure victory.  This was a solid team effort by the Blacks who remain optimistic and look forward to their next league match on the 29th of October against MTM2.  The opposition nominates a player of the match, which on this occasion went to Lorna Graham.

In Division Three Cowie Reds are holding their own while the less experienced Cowie Whites are putting in determined performances and enjoying the experience of their first season playing league matches.

The Reds achieved a well-deserved victory at the Alex Collie Centre on Tuesday 6th October against Newtonhill’s Rebound Too in their last match before the break.  The team worked well together with good movement through out the court and used short accurate passing to work the ball into the circle.  With the ball in the circle, shooters Fiona Lamont and Kirsty Jack successfully netted goal after goal.  Play became frantic in the third quarter as the Reds sensed victory but come the last quarter they settled and took control to secure their second win of the season with a score of 28-18.  Player of the match, Kirsty Forbes.

Cowie Reds: Williams, Cubbage, Forbes, Harris, Hossainpur (Captain), Jack, Lamont, Munn, Sutherland.

The Whites, the least experienced of the teams, has struggled to field a full team this season and despite plucky play from committed individuals the team are still looking for their first win.  The Whites’ final match before the break was also on Tuesday and was against Dundee’s second team TNT DB.  Both teams started a player down, six verses six, which ensured evenly shared play and the Whites played well.  They worked on all aspects of their play throughout the game, particularly coming forward and getting in front of their defender.  However TNT DB’s stronger shooting proved too much for the hard working White defence and TNT DB were the assured victors with a final score of 29-13.  Player of the match, Bev Coutts.

Cowie Whites: Bathgate, Brydon, Carns, Coutts (Captain), Fullerton, Jacobs, Owen.

Results: Charleston vs Cowie Whites, 27-13
