Cowie Red and Whites fight for half scores
Cowie’s Red and White teams were made to fight hard to achieve half scores in their respective Aberdeen and District Netball Association league division three matches on Tuesday 17th November.
The Reds started strongly against Beacon 2, despite losing the toss and the early goal from the first centre. The first quarter is historically slow for Cowie teams, however the Red’s defence was strong, their spacing good and the attack’s movement in the circle achieved goals. The Reds ended the quarter just one goal down 7-8.
The Reds made a Goal Defence substitution for the second quarter and the defence remained strong making some impressive interceptions. The team tried to play at their own pace and used their Centre and Wing Attack to good effect, feeding into the attackers in the Circle. But the Beacon team held firm and their excellent shooting ensured they ended the first half the 15-13 leaders.
The third quarter proved the turning point as Beacon were handed possession as a result poor footwork and dropped balls by the Reds as well as lobs into the circle that missed their mark. Once in possession Beacon took full advantage and stretched their lead to 20-14.
Beacon dominated the final quarter as the Red’s performance stumbled. The Reds continually gave possession away and added held balls to their misdemeanours. Their defence remained strong but Beacon’s faultless shooting proved too much and the Red’s attack just couldn’t match it. The final score of 30-16 to Beacon 2 earned the Reds a point for achieving over half the score of the opposition, which provided a little comfort to a team frustrated by their avoidable silly mistakes. Jo Cubbage was Cowie player of the match.
Cowie Reds: Cubbage, Forbes, Harris, Hossainpour, Jack, Minty, Munn, Williams.
The Whites won their toss and like the Reds started strongly against opposition, Ellon 2. The goals were hard fought and scoring went with centre with Ellon finishing the quarter 5-4 leaders.
In the second quarter both teams settled and the Whites defended well, gaining possession through a number of interceptions, however silly mistakes meant these opportunities were not converted to goals. These lost opportunities along with the changes to Ellon’s line up allowed Ellon to stretch their lead to 11-5 at the end of the second quarter.
With only seven players the Whites didn’t have the luxury of substitutions, however by switching the Wing Defence and Wing Attack their play moved faster and they managed to reward their effort with some goals to end the third quarter 21-11 down.
In the final quarter both teams were fighting for every ball and play was concentrated in the centre third. Excitement mounted with each of the many intercepted balls and the Whites valiantly remained around the half score mark. Their perseverance was rewarded at the whistle, with a final score of 15-27 they achieved over half score and the Whites attained their first point of the league. Cowie player of the match went to Louise Bathgate
Cowie Whites: Bathgate, Brydon, Jacobs, Lewis, Naylor, Owen, Parmar
