Cowie Ladies Netball Club’s Black team notched up another victory in Aberdeen and District Netball Associations division 2, while in division 3 their Red team fell short against Rebound Too despite a last minute rally in the last quarter.
The Blacks started positively against Aberdeen University 3 and from the first centre pass were in control. They scored goal after goal while the University had little to respond with and it was only the swiftness of their Goal Attack that helped them onto the score sheet. Blacks 14 – University 7.
The Blacks maintained their lead in the second quarter but communication errors in their defence allowed the University to break through on a number of occasions. Once again their Goal Attack’s beautiful shooting maintained their goal tally and the first half ended Blacks 25 - University16.
With only seven players in each squad neither team could substitute, however the Blacks switched their Wing Defence and Centre to prevent fatigue. With University’s GA the major threat the Black’s Wing Defence and Goal Defence worked together to keep her out of the circle and scupper their chances at goal. At the other end the Blacks Goal Shooter was once again on top form as she scored more and more from her ever widening comfort zone. Blacks 33 - University 23
In the last quarter the Blacks built on their lead as the team put into practice the weeks of training. Tight defence, swift centre court play and beautiful shooting combined for a well deserved win over a young team that played well but lacked fight. Final score Cowie Blacks 45 - University 31.
For the second week running Claire Buckley’s faultless performance as Goal Shooter earned her Player of the Match.
Cowie Blacks: Buckley, Craig, Corbett, Currie, Fry, Graham, McFadden.
The Reds missed an opportunity to redress their previous defeat against Rebound Too. Rebound Too started with the advantage of first centre and dominated the quarter with snappy and consistent passing. The Reds were able to make some useful interceptions only to loose possession by fouling the opposition. The shooters worked hard against a tight defence but too many shots missed their target and Rebound Too led the first quarter 8-4.
By the second quarter the Reds seemed to warm up and move their game forward. Despite some wild overhead passes they managed to retain possession and work the ball in and out of the circle to obtain shooting advantage. But Rebound Too still had the advantage at half time 16 goals to10.
The half time team changes didn’t upset the Reds and their defence worked exceptionally hard with Nicola Minty intercepting and grabbing rebounds. The whole team offered and re-offered for passes and worked the ball up court to the shooting circle where the shooters worked well once again. Despite some crazy lob passes Rebound Too maintained their lead thanks to some lovely shooting. Rebound Too 23 - Cowie Reds16
The Reds made more changes for the last quarter and really took the game to Rebound Too. Movement throughout the court was good and the defence tight. Good forward offers in the centre led to sharp snappy circle work. With the ball in the circle Kirsty Jack and Fiona Lamont took confident shots and the goals went in. It was a determined come back but it just wasn’t enough and Rebound Too maintained their lead to win the match 26-24.
