Mixed Fortunes for Cowie Ladies
Cowie Ladies Netball Club started the New Year and the second half of netball season with tough but enjoyable matches in the Aberdeen and District Netball Association leagues. An injury depleted Black team pulled off a well deserved win in their second division match against MTM2 and the Red team let an early lead slip through their fingers in their third division clash with Charleston.
After winning the toss the six player Black squad started with confidence and were unlucky to end the quarter one goal behind10-11.
Without a Wing Defence the Black’s Goal Defence and Goal Keeper were made to work hard and they successfully held MTM2’s attack at bay. Meanwhile at the other end the Black’s shooting duo of Buckley and Currie took full advantage of their shots at goal and Cowie edged their way ahead, finishing the first half 20-18 leaders.
The Blacks switched their Centre and Wing attack for the third quarter and tried to slow their game to prevent fatigue, but the pace seemed as hectic as ever as they succeeded in stretching their lead to five goals. 32-27.
MTM2 put up a good fight with some swift passing and good use of the space resulting from the missing Black player. However the Black defence remained strong and their attack maintained enough pressure to hold onto their lead and to the surprise of some of the team finished 41-36 winners.
Leanne Currie, in her first game since the start of December, played with confidence and determination which earned her the opposition’s nomination for player of the match.
Cowie Blacks: Buckley, Corbett, Currie, Fry, Graham, McFadden.
Cowie Reds started positively by wining the toss and taking the first centre pass against the young Charleston team. But their play was frantic and the Reds were unable to take control or use the three seconds available to pass. Good communication and tight marking ensured Charleston’s attacks were held at bay, and swift movement in the attacking circle by Goal Attack Kirsty Forbes gave the Reds a first quarter lead of 5 goals to 3.
In the second quarter the Reds worked hard to link up their passes and move the ball up the court, but Charleston’s Goal Defence and Goal Keeper were able to intercept some of the more careless passes and used the possession to their advantage. Both teams marked tightly and the half time score of 11-9 to the Reds was a reflection of how closely matched the teams were.
A number of team changes for the second half unsettled the Reds and play was once again frantic with careless passing and footwork errors that handed possession to the opposition. On occasion the Reds moved the ball up to their attacking circle only to be foiled by interceptions, missed catches and shots wide of their mark. With Charleston’s GA and GS on top form the Reds just couldn’t match their goals and Charleston took the lead at the end of the third quarter with 17 goals to the Red’s 15.
The Reds made further changes for the last quarter but still couldn’t slow their play or time their runs and passes just right, and they struggled to take control. Despite some strong defending by the Reds Charleston’s shooting was just too good and Charleston pulled further ahead to win a well fought match 24 goals to 18.
Captain Marilena Hossainpour was rewarded for her hard work and determination with player of the match.
Cowie Reds: Cubbage, Forbes, Harris, Hossainpour, Jack, Lamont, Munn, Williams.
